The Department of Undergraduate Studies Introduction

The Department of Undergraduate Studies was established in July 1967, shortly after the founding of Foreign Trade University (FTU), under its original name, the Academic Affairs Office.

The Department advises and assists the Rector in managing and organizing undergraduate full-time education at the University. Its responsibilities also include developing new academic disciplines and programs, as well as innovative educational models that respond to societal needs and align with the University’s development strategy.

The Department currently has 16 staff members.

Deputy Head in Charge: Pham Thanh Ha, MA

In 2008, the Department transitioned from an academic year-based management system to a credit-based education system. Since then, its staff have consistently demonstrated initiative, creativity, and a commitment to innovation in academic administration. They have actively adopted information technology in academic management and operations, while introducing various improvements in academic planning, timetable scheduling, teaching reports and administration, as well as the monitoring and inspection of teaching progress.

The Department has consistently fulfilled its responsibilities in managing the University’s full-time undergraduate programs, which serve approximately 15,000 students annually across 41 academic programs, including 4 advanced programs, 5 high-quality programs, 16 career-oriented programs, 8 integrated programs, and 9 standard programs. Approximately 50% of these programs are delivered in English or other foreign languages.

In the context of increasing institutional autonomy in higher education, the Department has advised the University on measures to reform admission methods, innovate undergraduate education, and develop regulatory and administrative documents governing full-time education. Alongside traditional admission methods, the University has introduced a range of flexible and comprehensive admission pathways in recent years to attract high-quality applicants and better align admission criteria with the specific requirements of each academic discipline. The University’s academic activities are conducted in compliance with relevant regulations and policies.

The Department has also played an active role in developing new academic disciplines and programs based on innovative educational models. Over the past five years, the University has introduced 18 new academic disciplines and 26 new academic programs.

In 2019, the Advanced and High-quality Program Management Division was established to consolidate and coordinate relevant activities across the University. It has gradually strengthened its role as the focal point for academic planning and resource coordination in the implementation of these programs.

In 2021, the Program Development Division was established. The Division has actively contributed to the development of new academic disciplines and programs, while also participating in the design and development of interdisciplinary satellite programs at Foreign Trade University. These initiatives aim to address the increasingly diverse needs of modern society and respond to the trends of international integration. Examples include AI and Data Science, Fintech, Digital Marketing, and Entrepreneurship and Innovation. These programs are designed to meet learners’ evolving needs in the changing educational landscape and have received positive recognition from both learners and society.

Over the course of its 65-year history, the Department of Undergraduate Studies, together with other University units, has contributed to the education and graduation of nearly 60,000 full-time students, helping to develop a highly qualified workforce for the country.

Through the sustained efforts and contributions of successive generations of leaders and staff, the Department has received numerous awards and commendations at various levels, including:

  • Certificate of Merit from the Prime Minister in 2000.
  • The title of Excellent Labor Collective at the ministerial level in multiple academic years from 2003 to the present.
