The Satellite Program “Data Science in Economics and Business” is designed to provide learners with fundamental knowledge of application programming, data mining and database management systems, giving them the most comprehensive preparation to go further in the field of data science.
The course is designed in a comprehensive and systematic manner, from foundational knowledge to how to apply that knowledge and use tools to solve real-world problems at work. Upon completing the course, learners will have the competencies and skills needed to apply for Junior Data Analyst and Data Analyst positions in businesses.
Upon completing the course, learners will be equipped with the practical knowledge and skills to begin a promising career in data science. At the same time, learners will also gain a solid foundation for moving into more specialised fields such as Machine Learning, Artificial Intelligence, Business Intelligence and Database Management.
The overall program consists of 5 courses:
- Advanced Mathematics
- Probability Theory and Mathematical Statistics
- Databases
- Programming for Data Analysis and Scientific Computing
- Advanced Analytics in Economics and Business
Of these, Advanced Mathematics and Probability Theory and Mathematical Statistics are 2 courses that students/learners have already completed or are currently taking in their undergraduate academic program and will complete before the closing of the course. These are also prerequisites for students/learners who wish to register for the program. In addition, learners must complete an entrance competency assessment, be selected for the course and pay the tuition fees in full to be officially recognised as admitted.
The remaining three courses will be taught within a course lasting 12 weeks. Each course is equivalent to 3 credits in the undergraduate academic program.
Course: Databases
This course aims to give learners an overview of data storage methods, query techniques and database management. Learners have the opportunity to explore database design methods and tools, while gaining practical programming experience using Structured Query Language (SQL) to clean and transform data and perform calculations on a modern database system. Through this, learners will develop a way of thinking that links business operations, analytical needs and the way data is organised, stored and retrieved in a database.
Course: Programming for Data Analysis and Scientific Computing
Learners will become familiar with Python, a high-level programming language used in many fields, especially data science. In addition, learners will take part directly in every stage of the development process of a data science project, from application programming to data processing, data visualisation, predictive modelling and decision-making, under the guidance and support of the lecturers.
Course: Advanced Analytics in Economics and Business
Learners will develop their analytical thinking, data-driven problem-solving skills and the ability to apply analytical methods to help determine the best course of action for real-world situations in a business context, and then interpret and communicate the results using appropriate visualisation techniques. The course content is closely linked to practical work in the field of Business Intelligence and is taught using the PBL (project-based learning) model. Upon completing this course, learners will have the knowledge and skills needed to sit the Microsoft Data Analyst Associate certification exam.

The course is organised with the aim of equipping interested Foreign Trade University students with highly applied, interdisciplinary and up-to-date professional knowledge and skills in data science, especially its applications in economics and business, thereby enhancing their personal value and opening up many new career opportunities.
As learners in the program, you will have the opportunity to learn from highly experienced industry experts; to practise working with real data from large enterprises that are partners of the program; and to be awarded a satellite course completion certificate together with a transcript issued by the Rector of Foreign Trade University.
In particular, Foreign Trade University students who join the program will be entitled to credit recognition for the two courses Databases and Programming for Scientific Computing and Data Analysis, as applicable to full-time (formal) undergraduate students of Foreign Trade University.
